Big fat audacious blog

A little bit of a landmarko

shutterstock 187575041Anna hits the nine month mark this month which means every moment from now on she's been on the outside longer than on the inside. With that her independence grows more each day. This means I’m learning what became apparent many months ago: that Anna is, was and always will be her own person. As Kahlil Gibran, in his fantastic book, The Prophet would say:

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.

Of course there are things that I wish for Anna. However, what I wish for her has more to do with her retaining her own independence and being her own person. My role in that being, as Gibran puts it:

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts

As a sometime leader in some situations my style has always been to lead by example. As much as I know she will be who she will be I am wary of pressing on to her all of my failings and missed opportunities to make right. My life is mine, her life is hers. If I believe that she can do anything she sets her mind to, I must also believe that of myself, wholly and without hesitation.

This is true of any life, there is no point going for anything less than massive. We’re going to stumble and be disappointed along the way anyway. What’s the point in failing at something we never really wanted anyway.

The last word and how I wish to be in this mission falls to Gibran:

The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.

Let your bending in the Archer’s hand be for gladness;

For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.
